I've been cooking since the age of eight when my mother taught me how to make dinner for our family of five. She had, and I now own, an old binder-style Betty Crocker cookbook that I loved. Family staples were pot roast and gravy, "goolash," fried chicken, meat loaf, pork chops, and occasional dinnertime breakfasts of waffles or pancakes.
I love cooking and enjoy thoroughly reading recipes, trying new things, and routinely inviting people over to sample things I've never cooked before. Thank goodness the disasters have been far and few between.
Mediterranean food is my favorite (read Italian...), with food from the Southwestern US and French cuisine following closely behind.
Cooking has often kept me from going bonkers in a world increasingly suffocated by my former profession as an educator. Weekends were and very much are a time to look forward to getting together with good friends or family and enjoying food and wine.
